Thanks to this book, My So-Called Freelance Life, I am all jazzed to be a real freelancer!
(Or maybe it’s the relief I feel from not looking at job ads.)
First things first: I called the IRS today (they are very friendly!) and verified that my old EIN is still alive. Now I can invoice clients without giving them my SSN (which, I think, is necessary for clients who pay you over $600 per calendar year, so that they can send you a 1099-MISC). Getting an EIN is very easy, you can do it online!
And then I joined the Brooklyn Creative Freelance Group and checked that my Freelancer’s Union membership is still active. I am on a roll! All I have left to do is get over my fears of: contacting potential clients, setting rates, writing up contracts, invoicing, & paying estimated taxes!
