Which really is more like 2 months since terrible things happened during that time (like Christmas). What are you talking about?!, you ask?

Well I’m glad you asked & I hope you will be glad that you asked too! It’s a little PHP application that will keep track of your expenses and your budget. And it’s called pFinance! (The ‘p’ is silent!)

But there are millions of apps that do that already! you exclaim! That is true. There are many fancier, prettier things out there. But those all seem really complicated and I was learning PHP, so I made a new app! It’s free! It runs on MAMP! Which means it should also run on LAMP + WAMP, right? It has no interest in downloading all your bank & credit card statements! You have to enter everything yourself! Like a Real Adult! You should try it!

I can see that you are difficult to convince. You can play around with the app here: pFinance @ moonchacha. And you can download the files [soon! right after we work out some kinks – ed., 04/01] and run them on your own computer. The pFinance_SETUP.php file will get you started (that is, if you already have M/L/WAMP set up). I promise there’s nothing malicious in there (so far as I can tell!).

pFinance will only get better! There are already plans for v2.0 & v3.0!

v2.0 will include:

  1. dHTML so that editing transactions & stuff won’t make the page bounce around so much!
  2. “GROUP BY” SQL queries & fewer PHP loops!
  3. income/expense groups! (maybe) (for now a negative transaction = expense, positive = income)
  4. Something that will make the parent categories make more sense!
  5. Monthly spending comparison tables!
  6. Better date range selection!

v3.0 will include:

  1. Fancy Flash charts!
  2. Maybe users!

I hope you like it! Also, if you need a simple PHP doodad & aren’t worried about security, I will gladly make you one in exchange for some $$$. :)

But right now nothing’s coming to mind, so here’s a list of things that were letdowns.

  1. Giant doorman umbrella (over 4′ diameter): I was so excited to get a giant umbrella that would keep me and my backpack dry. They were on sale for only $15 at Daffy’s and I took the largest one they had & waited anxiously for rain. That’s when I found out that the umbrella is too heavy to hold with one hand and it’s especially cumbersome when there’s wind.
  2. Rollerblades: These were supposed to change my life! Rollerblading would be easier (and more affordable) than riding a bike around the city and so much faster than walking! But after a week of falling, I gave up speed for safety & pride.
  3. Slow cooker: There were so many promises! Hearty stews! Easy chili! Dinner will be ready as soon as you walk in the door after a long day at the office! These were all true, except everything we cooked in the crockpot tasted like mush.
  4. Cable TV: Cable is like a time vacuum. There must be some good shows, like documentaries and science/history programs, on the 1000+ channels. But I find myself watching makeovers all the time.

If I could have that money back, I would spend it on a digital camcorder.

They redesigned their site and the numbers are buggy.

When I tried to make a one-time bill payment, the “Payment Amount / Statement Balance Due” was $50 more than my actual balance (which was correct on the “Account Overview” page). The payment amount can be changed in the little text box, but there’s no reason to trust that there aren’t other problems in their system. TWC, why do you suck so bad!?

Statement Balance Due: $172.39 Current Balance: $110.84 Current charges & Payment due: $110.84
