Ok, I’m tired of talking about Audrey Kawasaki, but I do think it’s interesting to talk about the definition of Art. I think that part of the problem/confusion is that non-text-based Art is not well classified. Literature (perhaps because it is language-based) has many more words for types of Literature. Everyone would agree that a poem is not a novel without getting upset; the two forms have completely different agendas. Likewise, light verse is not the same as a sonnet is not the same as a haiku. So I think that is the main problem with defining art. There’s Outsider Art, Graffiti, Abstract, etc etc but … funny how restricting the definition of something allows for more acceptance. um, I don’t have time to flush this out right now. But anyway, please comment with your thoughts on what makes art Art. And don’t be a jerk! How often do you get to talk & really think about these things in normal life outside of school?
(p.s. I particularly like this site by David Grainger, which talks about Art in an informal, accessible way. He defines the category of art when he talks about a work, which helps a lot.)
